Holiday: Jamaica

Lucky Naami Padi, 29, her son, Sebastian, 22 months, and her sister jetted off for a Caribbean break!

We were looking for a child friendly holiday where we could soak up the sun, so a trip to the Caribbean was just the ticket.

Where did you stay?

We stayed at the gorgeous Gran Bahia Principe in Runaway Bay. The resort was right on the beach and our spacious rooms had sea views. Lucky us! My sister, Miyo, 24, and I had adjoining rooms with king-size four poster beds, sofas, balconies and very strong air conditioning for when the sun got too much – bliss!  There was plenty of space left over for the lovely wooden cot they set up for Sebastian too. The rooms even had a free Jamaican blue mountain coffee. A great way to start each day!

What did you do?

With three pools, a spa, free watersports and a gym it would have been easy not to leave the resort at all! We had a great time in the pools and walking up and down the miles of sandy beaches. With trained lifeguards on duty all along the sea front it felt very safe for Sebastian to have his first little paddle. There were plenty of activities for kids too, even though Sebastian was a bit too young to join in. An excuse to go back when he’s older!

Outside the resort we were spoilt for choice. From zip wires through the forest, to walking up the famous Dunn’s river waterfall – everything was only a short drive away. One day, we decided to head to Dolphin Cove, the largest natural dolphin lagoon in the world. Sebastian was thrilled to get the chance to touch one of the dolphins!

Another day we took a trip to bustling Ocho Rios, a town just twenty away minutes on a local bus. We took a wander through the local market and had fun haggling for some spices.

How’s the grub?

The resort had five restaurants and a buffet but our favourite was the little hut on the beach, serving spicy jerk chicken and tasty BBQ. It was very laid back and the food was amazing, fresh and always hot off the grill – perfect to eat overlooking the sea. The seafood’s brill too, and one day we had fresh fish, caught that morning, from Mother’s restaurant in Ocho Rios, as well as delicious coconut ice-cream. A fantastic taste of this gorgeous country.
